A calm bedtime routine for kids, step by step
A bedtime routine works best when it's the same, in the same order, most nights. Here is a simple one many families use. Adjust the times to your child.
The routine
- Wind down (30 to 60 minutes before bed). Screens off, lights dimmer, quieter play.
- Bath or wash up. A warm bath is a clear signal that the day is ending.
- Pajamas and teeth. Same order every night.
- Pick out tomorrow's clothes so there's nothing to think about in the morning.
- Into bed, lights down. A small night light is fine.
- One book or one short story. Agree on one before it starts.
- A short audio story to finish. Something calm, about 10 minutes, at low volume. Then a goodnight.
Tips that help
- Keep the order the same, even on weekends when you can.
- Use a timer or a clear "last step" so bedtime doesn't keep stretching.
- If you use a phone or tablet for audio, turn the screen down and switch off autoplay.

A story for the last step
Sleepy Starship is made to be that last step: about 10 to 11 minutes, calm from start to finish, and always ending back home in bed.
