Screen-free bedtime: audio stories instead of a screen
Many parents want to keep screens out of the bedroom but still need something to help the last few minutes of bedtime go smoothly. Audio stories are a good middle ground.
Why audio works at night
- Kids can close their eyes and still follow the story.
- There's no bright screen in a dark room.
- A parent can step out while the story finishes.
How to set it up
- Smart speaker or old phone: start the episode, then put the device out of reach.
- Screen down: if it has to be a phone or tablet, turn it face down or use a sleep timer.
- Autoplay off: so the next show doesn't start on its own.
- Low volume: the story should be easy to hear but not fill the room.
A screen-free story to try
Sleepy Starship is audio only: about 10 to 11 minutes per episode, with a calm voice, soft piano music and no scary parts.
