Sleep stories for kids
A sleep story is a bedtime story written to be listened to with eyes closed. Instead of building to an exciting ending, it slowly winds down.
How a sleep story is different
- It has very little plot tension. Nothing needs to be solved.
- It spends time on calm details: what things look like, sound like and feel like.
- It gets slower and quieter toward the end.
- It ends somewhere safe, often back in bed.
Using sleep stories at home
Make the story the last step of the routine, after the bath, pajamas and teeth. Keep the room dim and the volume low. If your child is still awake when it ends, that's fine. The point is a calm landing, not a race to sleep.
Some kids like the same story every night for weeks. That repetition is normal and can be comforting.
A sleep story to try
In Sleepy Starship, your child is Captain of a cozy spaceship. With Choo-Choo, a small fuzzy co-pilot, they visit one gentle world each night, then fly home to bed. Each episode is about 10 to 12 minutes.
